Both weights are propbably similar with any number of quality guys that could go either.

119 lbs
1. Blake Whitfield - Crescent (Jr., 2009 112 1st, 2008 112 SQ)
2. Tyler Alley - Chesterfield (Jr., 2009 103 2nd)
3. Landis Hiers - Bamberg-Ehrhardt (Fr.)
4. Jonathan Rowe - Indian Land (So., 2009 112 SQ)
5. Emilio Uc-Tun - Ashley Ridge ()
6. Andrew Gleaton - Edisto ()
7. Storm Squires - Aynor ()
8. Randy Medina - Columbia (So.)
9. Matt Leatherwood - Pendleton ()
10. Phillip Rainwater - Liberty ()
11. Trey Ward - Waccamaw ()

125 lbs
1. Jeremy Phillips - Woodruff (Sr., 2009 125 3rd, 2008 112 2nd, 2007 103 2nd)
2. Andrew Rankin - Walhalla (Sr., 2009 119 3rd, 2008 103 1st, 2007 103 4th)
3. Michael Wolfe - Hanahan (Sr., 2009 130 3rd)
4. Jamar Gore - Loris (Jr., 2009 112 3rd, 2008 103 SQ)
5. Jaden Humphries - Pendleton (Sr., 2008 103 SQ)
6. Anthony Bianco - Crescent (Sr., 2009 125 SQ, 2008 119 SQ)
7. Lane Walling - Bamberg-Ehrhardt (So., 2009 112 SQ)
8. Matt Moore - Chesterfield (Sr., 2009 112 SQ, 2008 103 SQ)
9. David Amick - Gilbert ()
10. Taylor Elizondo - Timberland (So.)
11. ? Hinojos - Woodmont ()
12. Josh Wolfe - Broome ()
13. Austin Emory - Chesnee (So., 2009 103 SQ)
14. Kiante Wingate - Cheraw ()

At 119,
I would take Whitfield over Alley in a tight one unless Rankin goes down there. Then he would be my pick. Heirs and Uc-Tun are also very solid.

At 127,
I would take Wolfe, then Rankin if he is there. There are other good kids there too (Bianco, Phillips, Walling, Moore), but those two stand out to me.

If you are worried about 127, test the waters against Wolfe when/if you and Hanahan meet up in the lowerstate Dual meet. He should be at 127 then. That would be a good match for both of you.

Rankin will be 127. He was at 127 last night at the Skyline and seems to be locked in there. My advice remains - wrestle where your body is at its best. If you feel like a beast at 119 and you aren't dehydrated and weakened, then that is your weight. If you are too sucked down and lose energy at 119, go 125. Make the decision about yourself and your best weight to compete and feel like a beast. Like Lex said there are tough kids at both weights. If you aren't at your best you probably won't win in either weight.

Perfectly put. Wrestle where you feel you can perform to your best.
Some guys are fine and need to cut a lot to be the "bigger" kid. Others need to feel fresh-legged.

I've been of the opinion the last several years that being focused, having sharp technique, fresh legs, and superior conditioning are more conducive to success than just cutting to be bigger. If you are imminently about to get in a fight and a kid weighs 5-10lbs more than you, are you doing to say "Hold on there Pal. You are not the same weight as me. I protest. Put on some sweats and run for an hour first. Then if you make it to an even weight as myself, I will commence to throw down."

I think it's pretty funny that Rankin wrestled 119 and 130 all year and now is a 125 Region Champ. Oh well if you got to run..I say run! 130 is pretty loaded!!! I should know!

I don't think he ever weighed in at 119 at all this year did he? When did he wrestle 119? I know he was weight certified 117 but wrestled 125 and 130 all year. Ever hear of a growth spurt? If he hopes to wrestle in college 119 is not the weight to be at your senior year. I think 125 is tougher and deeper than 119 with Rankin, Phillips, Wolfe, Bianco, Humphries, Moore and so on. Do you think Alley or Whitfield (I mean that's pretty much it at 119) are really better than those?

As for 130-I suspect he is not at 130 because he is not big enough. He looked very small beside Oaks at region Monday - shorter and not nearly as thick. I seem to recall he bumped up to 130 in hopes of getting Oaks when walhlla wrestled abbeville after the challenge was issued on this board? He was there but Oaks went 135. He may have gotten beat, but was that running? The only other 130 that stands out is Geiges. I fully expect rankin-geiges to be a N/S matchup. Weak argument on the dodging to me.

I haven't seen Rankin wrestle this season, but I would venture to say if he spent most of his season at 125 he will probably be there. That is not dodging. Rankin has been a permanent fixture at state the last several years consistently in the medal matches. Whatever weight he goes (119-130), he will be a definite factor. He is crafty and has fantastic mat awareness. I think the top 3 at 130 are on a different level than the top 3 at 125 and 119 right now though. It is similar to last years 119.

As for wrestling in college and weights,
The lightest weight is 125. Colleges do recruit guys at 119 if they have been growing steadily over the years and if that is a tough weight. If a kid looks like he is finished growing at 119, it may be tough for him to get a look unless he has been out there competing on the national circuit in the off season and proving himself. They expect kids to grow and physically mature between their senior and incoming freshmen seasons. Take a look at the recruiting page of Intermat (below). Plenty of kids that I know are still 119 this season that will be 125-133's in college (Tanner Moon stands out).
That being said, in a state like SC, a decent program will want kids that don't have to cut to be successful. Our state is just not at a level of competition yet that justifies it for someone wanting to tear it up in college. Seniors at 103-112 will have a hard time being taken seriously for college.

Lower, to address your off-base comments - First, you need to get the facts straight. You said "it's pretty funny that Rankin wrestled 119 and 130 all year and now is a 125 Region Champ." The fact is Rankin did not wrestle 119 once this season despite being certified 117. He wrestled 119 preseason scrimmage at Crescent with a 4-5 pound allowance. He weighed about 120-121 in preseason. He now is walking around at about 126-128 with absolutely no cutting needed. He wrestled 130 some because the only other 130 his team has is a young kid who weight certified 119.1. He has wrestled 125 about as many matches as he did 130 this year. Look at him beside Oaks and you'll quickly see he is not a 130. It seems like SCMAT knew he was a 125 from the beginning of the year. Way back in Dec he was ranked at 125. Ya think maybe that is because he was wrestling 125?... Genius!
