BAMBERG -- Cody Slaughter has found his calling.
At least, that is what Slaughter professed Friday night, and it is hard to argue. In just his second year as the head coach of the Bamberg-Ehrhardt wrestling team, Slaughter was named Class A Wrestling Coach of the Year. He received the honor last weekend at a meeting of the South Carolina Athletic Coaches Association in Greenville.
"It felt good," Slaughter said. "It let me know that I'm doing a good job, and that I have found what I should be doing. Even though there are not many 1-A programs that have wrestling, I think there are a little over 20, that means that I was picked over 20 coaches as the coach of the year. It makes you feel good, and makes you definitely want to come back and do better."
Doing better will be easier said than done for Slaughter and his team next season. That is because this season, Slaughter guided B-E to a 31-15 record and the Red Raiders finished as runners-up to Chesterfield for the state title.
"This is a real good testament to my kids," Slaughter said. "They worked so hard, and that is the reason I got the award.
"It is really exciting," he added. "We almost met the goal that I set when I came here, two years and win a state title, but we came close and that was almost as good as winning. Next year, we should be even better. We started so many young guys this year, and pretty much the whole starting lineup will be back. The kids are already saying, ‘You won coach of the year, so now we have to win state.'"
