I am proud of the Cfield boys, even though we had no champions we marched in there with 8 kids and proved be belonged.

Maltby at 112lbs upset the #1 seed and made it to his first finals match. He ran into an Alabama kid that was just too explosive. Maltby wreslted tough but came up just a little short.

Alley placed 2nd in a ridiculous 119lbs bracket, he got handled by another Alabama stud. Alley knocked off a state champ in the semis. The other side of the bracket had two state champs as well. Toughest weight class by far.

Harper was not in an overly tough bracket, however he ran into a TN stud in the finals that was too funky for him to score on. He turned 2 beautiful high-crotches into funk roll takedowns and somehow stopped a beautifully orchestrated low-single and a sweep single. It was definately a case of one man doing the action and the other man doing all the scoring. Harper wrestled well but just couldn't handle the funk.

Nick Gulledge (140) knocked off some tough kids before running into the eventual champ in the semis to GA kid. It was tie match in the third but the GA kid opened up and cruised to a victory. Gulledge came back in the consos and beat a Parkview GA kid who placed 2nd at the Slam last season and was a 5A state runner-up. Gulledge finished with an impressive 3rd place finish in a stout bracket.

At 145, Elijah Burr finished 3rd, losing to DaVita of Hillcrest in convincing fashion in the semi's. DaVita then got spanked by former 2A Winkler. Winkler is now the official Oconnee County poster boy with no front teeth. Burr then beat a state placer from TN to finish third.

152, Franklin Crowley finished 3rd, with a minor upset in the quarters. Wrestled some trialing consolation matches against some tough kids and found a way to win. I am very proud of his efforts.

Our other two wrestlers: Daniel Trexler (130) went 1-2 and Jerelle Hannah (171) went 3-2. Experience caught up with Hannah, but once his weight and conditioning are under control he should be fine.

OTHER 2A KIDS:
I didn't pay attention to too many:

Geiges (BE) placed 5th I believe. Liberty had a couple of kids fighting for 5th-7th but unsure of their placement. I didn't see Christ Church anywhere.

Great tournament. A little cramped, but it ran smoothly.

The Southern Slam is an event where you can have great individuals in certain weights from out of state. Bradley, Oak Mountain, Parkview, and Woodward Academy are always tough and come in with a little more mat time than SC. Hillcrest was tough. Props to C'field for their performance.

Matchups, SEED's, and and of course quality of calls play into it when you have this many good guys competing. When you have multiple state champions and placers from different states in a 32 man bracket this early in the season, sometimes the best guys match up early. No slight to anyone, but perhaps to best wrestler at the tournament, Tanner Moon from Oak Mountain Alabama got a 2nd seed at 119. I've seen Moon win at least four AA's in the last two years. Because Oak Mountain wrestles at a bunch of sick national tournaments throughout the year, he has losses. It is not a perfect science this early in the year.

Geiges was seeded 6th in a loaded 130. Went 7-2. Came out flat on Saturday and lost to Khair of Woodward Academy 6-4. They are friends from off season competition, etc. Khair surprised him twice and played it to his strengths. Pulled out at tight one in the 3rd. Geiges won a couple of more matches, then had a BAD match against a game Hillcrest kid that was well coached. Geiges came back and beat the Eastside kid for 5th.

Should he have done better.....UH, Yes. On any given day though. That is why we wrestle.

Here are the team points:

1. Bradley Central HS 263.50
2. Oak Mountain HS 230.50
3. Hillcrest HS 189.00
4. Fort Mill HS 168.50

It appears based on the numbers that Cfield only took 8 wrestlers to the tournament. Are you guys down this year. I guess the rest of the 1A world wants to know. However it looks like those eight can carry you close but not to the Promised Land. Great showing to finish 7th at the slam with 8.

Not that it is the case with Chesterfield, but a lot of schools only take the guys that they feel are ready for the Southern Slam as well as several other big tournaments. Some schools that have 1st year guys at certain weights will hold them out so that they do not get discouraged. In a lot of cases, teams may have JUST gotten their football guys back a few days before a tournament and just don't think it is worth the beatdown, hotel rooms, and such to take them to an event they are not ready for. Let's face it, football guys come from have 10 other guys on the field with them to have their backs and cover their mistakes to non. They also come from going hard for 10-15 seconds then getting a 1+ min break to having to wrestle hard for 6 minutes (or more). It is an adjustment. Look across the board at teams at tournaments. Hanahan took like 10 to the Palmetto Classic and they will be fielding a full time.
Chesterfield will be fine. Don't be lulled into a false sense of comfort.

well put Lex L.

We are mos def not a great dual team as or right now. However, once we get our guys in the right weight classes and some mat time underneathe some newbies heads we should be fine. Until then, we will drop a dual match or three here and there. I have confidence in our practice room will prepare our kids to be ready come postseason.
